Mind Over Mania on MSNBC

This Sunday Nov 6th at 10 pm MSNBC will be airing Mind Over Mania, about a group of women in therapy as they delve into the mind control they were subjected to. This is the result of an effort over the last year and half to document the ever growing numbers of high demand groups and new religious movements in America. EPd by Tom Cappello, Michael Lucker & Vasco Nunes, produced by Alana Goldstein and helmed by Tom’s Crazy Legs Productions along with Lusitan.

RAMPART will be screening this Saturday in Los Angeles at 10pm during AFI Fest  (tickets link)

It was a pleasure to frame for Bobby Bukowsky and Oren Moverman, and work with the cast and crew family that formed during the shooting in my corner (and street) of Los Angeles: LAPDs Rampart Division.  This will be the film’s first public screening in Los Angeles after its premiere at Toronto, it will be released shortly thereafter by Millennium Entertainment.

Bobby, Ben & Oren during shotlisting sessions

There is a cast and crew screening on Sunday at the DGA, unfortunateluy won’t be at this longitude to make it, have fun!

a short clip link and here is a recent review by Time Out London:

Author James Ellroy and ‘The Messenger’ director Oren Moverman deconstruct the police procedural in this stunning, idiosyncratic anti-thriller. Woody Harrelson plays ‘Date Rape’ Dave Brown, a bulldog beat cop working in LA’s infamous Rampart division during the long-running late ’90s corruption scandal which would ultimately tear the department apart. Brown is the ultimate cinematic expression of Ellroy’s archetypal hero: a conflicted, violent, self-loathing, womanising, borderline racist murderer with a razor wit, an encyclopedic brain and a dominant protective instinct towards the (many) women in his life.

Harrelson’s performance is astonishing, and he’s backed by a gallery of terrific supporting players, notably Anne Heche and Cynthia Nixon as his long-suffering ex-wives, Ben Foster as a down-and-out veteran and Ned Beatty as a seemingly avuncular old-school ex-cop. But it’s Moverman’s direction which drives the film, employing an experimental kaleidoscope of off-beam angles, vibrating neon and a stunning use of music and sound design. The result is a disorienting, dazzling and wholly unique experience, a film to file alongside the great LA noir masterpieces of the 1970s.

New Year Greeting

2011 New Year

New Year’s Greetings!

Wishing you a prosperous, creative and healthy 2011.

MMX

2010 started with H.M. being well received by the critics and patrons at the Whitney Biennial 2010 while We Live In Public had its theatrical release at the Egyptian, after joining DIG! into the Permanent Collection of the Museum of Modern Art in NYC.

MTV decided to re-launch their logo after 35 years. Two shoots for director Evan Silver in the East and West Coast became the canvas for the new logo across the broadcast as well as before the world, presented at the UN during Mashable & 92Y Social Good Summit.

The Tonight Show went through some ups and downs, when Leno returned the New Credit Sequence was shot with new DSLR technology for NBC by Wut It Is.

Mirror Films via Paul Papanek produced the on the move spots for US Cellular directed by Doug Walker, while director Jason Roth defined some looks for MTV2.

Some work for Walmart this year was eclectic.  In Mexico to direct/dp for Artur Spiegel’s 7ate9 to tell the Secret life of Spinach‘ a Walmart project, and later joined producer Jessica Jimenez of Lunchbox, shooting for Rik Reinholsen some projects like Nelly Furtado, and directing in Puerto Rico for Juanes.

This fall was mostly dedicated to Oren Moverman’s Rampart, working for DP Bobby Bukowski operating the B camera for this double Arri Alexa feature.  The cast and crew assembled by producers Lila Yacoub, Ben Foster, Mike DeFranco, Lawrence Ingle, Ken Kao and Clark Peterson was incredibly kind and versatile.

Documentary form continues to manifest itself in collaborative efforts, this time executive producing and shooting with CLP‘s Tom Cappello, Alana Goldstein, and Michael Lucker on a documentary series for a news outlet, it has a green light for the pilot but just now getting going. Other narrative and documentary projects dot the horizon.

The best news of the year, beyond Joaquim’s wonderful 7 years on earth, was that Portugal was able to recover some face after the world cup by shutting out Spain 4-0 (some might say 5-0) recently.  It is nice to be the first to give the world champs a little dose of humility after their spectacular showing at the Cup in South Africa.  I just hope that both countries won’t need a EU bailout.

HAPPY NEW 2011!

3D Workshop at 3ality

3D at 3ality

Nunes completed a weeklong 3D workshop at 3ality in early 2010.

The focused and in depth workshop covered the major areas of 3D theory, film production, camera rig configuration, stereographic parameters, and lots of examples of what not to do.  3ality is at the forefront of this technology, it was a priviledge to be in the first class of its kind at their facility, before the ICG Local 600 series of 3 day workshops took hold.  The group was composed of Local 600 members in all categories, a Sony Engineering expert, an Oscar winner for Visual Effects, and lead by the experienced core of 3ality’s hands on personel.

2009 – Nunes boards the Lynx – Sails Transpac Ocean Yacht Race

2009 - Nunes boards the Lynx - Sails Transpac Ocean Yacht Race

LYNX  Sails the 2009 TRANSPACIFIC YACHT RACE

Nunes boarded the Lynx to across the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii from Long Beach during the Transpac Race 09′. Chris Woods was seeking a filmmaker to fill the one bunk documenting mission of this ocean crossing.

Between California and Hawaii, the Lynx Crew encountered submarines, bioluminescence, and some high pressure slow times, some shaffing of lines, and plenty of sail changes. After 18 days at sea, it arrived at Diamond Head, to a raucus crowd.

The 122-foot square topsail schooner Lynx sailed into Rainbow Harbor, Long Beach on June 17, 2009 and is on display prior to the start of the 2009 Transpacific Yacht Race. June 29th is the start line of the 2,225 mile race to Honolulu.

“Sailing aboard this sleek, powerful schooner will bring an exciting new dimension to racing across the Pacific,” said Jeffrey Woods, Director of Operations. “We will match the traditional strength of Lynx against the technology and speed of 21st century sailing machines such as the 100 foot Alfa Romeo, a Reichel Pugh design some call ‘the fastest yacht in the world”.“Of course we can’t compete boat for boat with Alfa Romeo, but on corrected time we just might surprise the fleet”.

Lynx participation in the 2009 Transpac is a symbolic gesture of honor to the schooner yacht Lurline and to all the wooden hull vessels that still sail the seas today preserving maritime history. Alfa Romeo went on to beat all time records at this race, they raced it in less than 6 days. Lynx won its Tall Ship category, and was not last trough the finish line with 18 days at sea.

America’s Privateer, Lynx, a 122-foot square topsail schooner, travels 7,000 nautical miles each year to ports along the West Coast and Hawaii, serving as a living history museum and classroom for the study of early maritime history and its role in establishing America’s freedom, as well as earth, life and physical science.

Sundance 2009 - WLIP Winner of Grand Jury Prize

We Live In Public won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival, it is the second such award for Nunes & Timoner.

Congratulations to all that worked on the film.

On the 40th anniversary of the Internet, WE LIVE IN PUBLIC tells the story of the effect the web is having on our society as seen through the eyes of “the greatest Internet pioneer you’ve never heard of”, visionary Josh Harris. He documented his tumultuous life, to create a riveting, cautionary tale of what to expect as the virtual world inevitably takes control of our lives.

Josh Harris, often called the “Warhol of the Web” through the infamous dot.com boom of the 1990’s, founded Pseudo.com, the first Internet television network and created his vision of the future, an underground bunker in NYC where 100 people lived together on camera for 30 days over the millennium. He proved how in the not-so-distant future of life online, we will willingly trade our privacy for the connection and recognition we all deeply desire. Through his experiments, including a six-month stint living under 24-hour live surveillance online which led him to mental collapse, he demonstrated the price to pay for living in public.

2008 Lyle Lovett & Its Not Big Its Large

This Fall of 2008, Lyle Lovett releases his latest album It’s Not Big, It’s Large, a deluxe set includes a feature length DVD that weaves studio and live versions of key tracks into a documentary that chronicles the album’s artistic gestation and recording sessions.

Lyle Lovett and Nunes directed the  documentary, which Nunes photographing while producing alongside Lyle and April Kimble.  The Feature breaks into 6 sections, each featuring a track, and each with a very different approach to the story structure, and visual treatment.  Mostly verite of the album, with some film and video sections while on the road and on location with Lyle Lovett.

Other documentations and collaborations with Lyle followed, including the Storytellers concert in RedWood City, and a couple of shows in Texas, and the Natural Forces made in 2009.

Sundance 2008 – Anvil & American Teen

Sundance 2008 - Anvil & American Teen

Nunes returned to Sundance in 2008, after Recycle‘s programming in 2005′s edition, to attend screenings of two films he had done some additional cinematography for Anvil and American Teen.

ANVIL – The Story of Anvil

Again thanks to Mat Denis,  who earlier sparked a collaboration of thousands of feet of film with David Lee Roth, who in this case referred Nunes to Sacha Gervasi and Chris Soos.  Soon Nunes was shooting Slash, Lemmy, and Lars Ulrich for inclusion into the project.

- Winner Best Documentary at the 2010 Independent Spirit Awards in Los Angeles
- Winner of Silver Hugo At Docfest, and Critics Choice by the Broadcast Film Critics Association
- Winner Audience Award at Los Angeles Film Festival and at Sydney International Film Festival
- Best Film at Calgary International Film Festival  and at the Galway Film Festival

In North America, the film was released on DVD on October 6, 2009. Distribution was handled by Fontana Distribution on behalf of VH1.  The film has received praise and high acclaim in many reviews, receiving a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The New York Times called it “possibly the greatest film yet made about rock and roll”, back in 2004 it said DIG! would surely be the cornerstone of any university curriculum on rock stardom. These films both dig deep into the passion of music.

AMERICAN TEEN

Jordan Roberts brought Nunes to collaborate with Nanette Burnstein (The Kid Stays in the Pictures).  The experience was stock full of debauchery in Baja Mexico, and Elvis’ in Indiana. Burnstein went on to win best director award at the Sundance Film Festival.

- Winner Best Director at Sundance 2008 – Nannette Burnstein
- Wide release by Paramount Vantage

2008 – International Documentary Work

2008 - Documentary TV

2008 took Nunes on several projects to distant international locations:

MTV – EXILED

The show is produced by Left Right, where Ken Druckerman lured Nunes given the many visual projects, such as This American Life, that he has produced.

Nunes joined director Bengt Anderson to India and Norway, seeing american teenagers face remote conditions and customs. Nunes was lucky to not have to face volcanic eruptions in Vanuatu but did have to bail off a snowmobile capsizing in the harsh topography of a snow packed fjord. The challenge was deftly handled by the hands of experienced production crews that brought the stories back in one piece.

Ganvik, NORWAY – Rain Deer Migration in Arctic Circle

The Migration took place within very specific time and physical conditions within the Artic Circle.

Working with local Samy people, the production created a base camp by the peninsula entrance, where the Rain Deer would be driven from hundreds of miles around onto their summer feeding grounds, 700 miles south of the North Pole.

A crash the day of the main push of the migration could have turned to the worse if not for quick reactions to bail.

Nunes and Turgleder‘s Thomas Nielsen had no communication to the outside world, but the tripod anchored to the rear of the snowmobile prevented injury and loosing the sled.

With a new viewfinder but the loss of the mattebox, we continued to capture the beauty of the migration.

**

Begur, INDIA – Begur’s Wild Honey Gathering Tribe in Kerala

Kerala Province has some of the most green luscious sections of India, rich in biodiversity.  The village of Begur welcomed us to their elephant protected shelters, and gathered a 6 foot square wild honeycomb for our shoot.  The sight of wild elephant’s in the range within the Wayanard’s Elephant Sanctuary will awaken anyone to the fragile balance of Earth. Begur Villager’s are good stewards/hosts to the resources they share within this protected environment.

The team was willing to detour for hours and visit Kappa Beach, where in 1498 Vasco da Gama landed.

T-WORD

Rod Weiner & partner Bosco had began to explore new themes in terrorism, and recruted Nunes to join them in Northern Ireland for a week of production shooting and interviewing across Ireland’s most charged towns. During this time, Ian Paisley, head of the political and religious unionist movement, stepped down after more than 30 years in power. The Murals of Belfast’s Falls and Shankhill Roads remain.

Albeit this famous mural was to be repainted that week.

Rob & Big

Jeff Tremaine, with whom Nunes had collaborated with on some nintendo spots with wildboyz  Chris Pontius and Steve-O – who was practically attacked by a lion on set which is another story - brought Nunes to meet with Ruben Fleisher, and capture the pilot  episodes of the Rob & Big Show.  The show was greenlit, and went on to be a big hit for MTV.

_____________________________

GREENHOUSE

Erica Forstadt and Adam Pinkus reached to Nunes to work on the first two pilot episodes of Mario Van Peebles’ Greenhouse.

An opportunity to work with Melvin Van Peebles is always dynamic. The episodes went on to greenlight the project for HD Broadcast.

2007 - Nimrod Nation

On 11/26/07, Sundance Channel premiered NIMROD NATION, a new 8-part series on the Sundance Channel photographed by Vasco Nunes, Paul Mailman and Wolfgang Held. The project was created by Brett Morgen (The Kid Stays in Pictures), with numerous talented field directors like Todd Lubin and Erica Forstadt.

The Series was announced to receive a Peabody Award in June 16th of 2008, recognizing distinguished achievement and meritorious public service by the oldest, most prestigious honor in electronic media. UGA’s Peabody Award Press Release: ”The sweet, sensitive ‘Nimrod Nation’ received a Peabody. This beautifully shot, eight-part documentary series from Sundance Channel takes viewers into the heart of a small Michigan town.”‘

Nimrod Nation profiles rural Watersmeet, Michigan, where everyone follows the progress of the local high-school basketball team – the Nimrods. More a portrait of a small American town than a conventional sports documentary, it sympathetically observes life and conversation in the local coffee shops, hunting lodges and locker rooms as the long, cold basketball season unfolds.

2007 Join Us

2007 Join Us

JOIN US

Using an intimate verité style, Timoner and Nunes dove deep to follow four families who had just left a controlling and abusive church in South Carolina that later come to realize that they had been members of a cult.

The film documents them intimately as they enter the only accredited live-in cult treatment facility in the world.  As they emerge from the safety of the treatment facility, they return to their homes to bring justice for the physical, emotional and financial abuse of  their Pastor, and try to rebuild a “normal” life.  Realizing the extent to which they have given up their individuality and personal beliefs in the church, and the abuse caused upon their children, the subjects experience an emotional turmoil of self-doubt, anger, guilt and desperation.  The film also gives voice to the cult leader and his wife, as they struggle to cope with the “betrayal” of their congregation. Join Us puts a human face to the cult problem, a significant issue that can affect anyone.

Initially Timoner & Jared Tobman were exploring a reality show idea at a Raelean camp in Canada.  But once Wellspring Retreat and Rocky Mountain Church Members were opened to documentation the project became a feature narrative about the cult problem.  It became a passion project for Nunes. who along with Timoner and Tobman formed 3rd Floor LLC in 2005. Shooting took place in the US and Spain, from 2005-2007. The project was ultimately funded by Nunes & Timoner in turbulent fashion, while Tim Rush helmed the editorial department.  The film was released in 2007 at the LAFF. The Film was broadcast on Sundance Channel, and is in wide release on DVD without proper complience by Timoner. Albeit it had very limited success with critics and audiences, its festival run included a Jury Prize from the Sidewalk Film Festival in 2007.

2004 DIG!

2004 DIG!

DIG!

- Honored with a Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at Sundance Film Festival
- Honored with inclusion into the Permanent Collection of the Museum of Modern Art in NYC

DIG! is the feature-length documentary shot over seven years about musicians Anton Newcombe, leader of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Courtney Taylor, head of the Dandy Warhols, star crossed friends and bitter rivals. From the moment they met, The Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre quickly bonded over a desire to not conform to the tastes of the recording industry. Yet, the bands’ choices over how to express their creativity and originality in a profit-driven industry eventually put them at irreconcilable odds.?In 1996 Anton Newcombe and his band the Brian Jonestown Massacre – who in a decade independently released 11 albums, 3 recorded in one year – are hell-bent on staging a revolution in the music industry.  They are convinced their friends, the Dandy Warhols, will join them to create a united front.  But Anton’s creative psychosis takes him to the most remote areas of the human mind to find his original art, and as a result, he destroys every opportunity for financial success. ?While tracking the destructive path of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, DIG! also accompanies the more ‘well-adjusted’ Warhols through their leader Courtney Taylor, as they navigate the corporate sea, trying to maintain their creative edge while starring in mega-budget music videos and entertaining crowds in the tens of thousands.?DIG! is about both musicians’ love and obsession, gigs and recordings, arrests and death threats, uppers and downers – their choices between art and industry, which unfold with the passage of time.

The film was ultimately purchased by Palm Picture’s Chris Blackwell.  Nunes, Koh, Timoner & Blackwell would develop a project about the History of Jamaican Music that unfortunately did not go into Production.  The Project was developed over a period of 3 years, with several shoots in UK and Jamaica.

“Heaven-sent narrative! ?If universities ever start graduate programs in rock stardom, ‘Dig!’ will surely be a cornerstone of the curriculum.” ?A.O. Scott, New York Times
“Terrific and fascinating! ‘Dig’ is chock full of drama yet too sympathetic to seem exploitative.” ?Dennis Harvey, Variety
“A viciously sharp essay on art, commerce, friendship and madness.” ?Ty Burr, The Boston Globe
“Powerful! Transcends the rock-doc genre.” ?Andrew Strickman, Rolling Stone
